WIW to host a party and a question(very wordy!)

We invited about 30 of my husband's colleagues and friends over for a party yesterday and I was very unsure about what to wear. I kept imagining that all his female colleagues would be impeccably dressed and would find my lack of hairstyling/makeup/chic factor appalling! Silly, I know but we've never hosted a party before and I was so so nervous.

Rather than wear a lot of colour (which is my signature), I decided to go for a more subdued, neutral palette. I wore a new grey dress (got this from India) with burgundy tights. To add some interest, I wore a studded burgundy leather bracelet and burgundy lipstick. When it became colder, I added a black bolero that had silver metallic thread running through (pic 3). This is a recent purchase and I really love it! Sorry the picture I took is so crappy! You can see the bolero in pic 4.

All the girls who came were in neutrals (mostly black /grey/cream) so I felt like I fit right in and that calmed me down enough to actually enjoy the party! Of course, they wore more makeup than me and had some elaborate and pretty hairstyles, but I found that I didn't mind that so much. I would feel silly being that made up, it just isn't me and I'm glad I didn't try.

What do you think of the outfit? Is it too plain?

Oh and I have a question - One of my husband's friends has invited us to another party next week, so now that I'm over my initial panic about fitting in, I might wear something more colourful - my emerald lace dress maybe (pic 5)? What do you ladies say? I would stand out in the sea of neutrals, but it'd be boring wearing neutrals for two parties in a row! I would add tights, of course, maybe black or navy.

Thanks for reading and helping! :)

Glad your party was a success! And you looked pretty, as always, in your grey. To me, the outfit doesn't come across as totally neutral because of those coloured tights (which become a focal point) and your bright smile. Glad it worked for you.

I think you can definitely go with some colour at the next party. It's who you are, and I'll bet you get compliments on what you are wearing! My only hesitation with the green dress would be the fabrication; is it heavy enough for you to feel warm? And how will you pull the look together if you add darker tights? Would you wear a jacket or the bolero again?

How about posting some pics so we can offer more suggestions!

Also, what type of a party is it? Will everyone be in dresses? Because another option, if it is more casual, might be jeans and one of your vibrant jackets.

Suz, thanks for giving me a starting point! I thought maybe the black bolero and black tights? I have a black obi also that would bookend the tights if/when I take my bolero off. Or a navy obi and navy tights?
The party will be on the casual side, but from what I saw last night, most of the girls were in dresses. I could wear jeans though, maybe with a dressier top? Or maybe coloured jeans and a fun top? Thanks for the ideas!
I will start a separate thread with outfit ideas :)

I think if you added a neutral scarf to the neutral dress it might really help the look. So fun to have events to get out with your husband and reasons to dress up. I hope you get many more invitations and reasons to really play with your wardrobe...Looking forward to see what you choose.

Congratulations on your successful party! You chose a great outfit to hostess in. No long drooping sleeves or flowing scarves to get in your way. I can just see you zipping around in your ballerines looking so chic in the burgundy tights and bracelet. You look very pretty and polished. Love the lippy on you too! The emerald dress looks summery to me, so I might chose nice (maybe colored) jeans and a dressy top instead for your next event. How exciting; have fun with your outfit. :) Good to see you!

Tracey: I avoided a scarf because I was indoors, but maybe I could have added a necklace instead! I'm excited to show you guys my next outfit too :-)

Claire: Thank you! Maybe a dressy top is the way to go, something colourful and more 'me'. :-)

Congrats on your successful party and successful outfit! It looks stunning on you, and I love the bolero jacket. I also think the emerald dress, while very pretty, looks a tad summery. How about a skirt and top?

Congrats! So happy your party was a success and that you felt comfortable. The grey dress is really stunning and I love the burgundy tights and bracelet. I might copy you on that ;-) I'm not that sure about the emerald dress, though. It is really really nice, but is it too summery?

Thanks Karie! I have a brown cord skirt so maybe I'll try to put together something involving that :-)

Thanks harmonica! I bought the emerald dress with the intention of wearing it all year round, with toppers and tights in autumn/ winter. So I want to try styling it with either navy/black. Will post pics. :-)
