Styling grey dress - need help!

I am making another trip to Paris this weekend and this time, I wanted to take along a dress.

This is one of the only dresses I have and I haven't worn it as much as I should. Now I want to change that. Sorry the lighting sucks, but you can see the dress by itself in pic 1 and 2. It has a grey and black checked pattern.

I wish I had some ballet flats comfy and sturdy enough for hours of walking, but I don't. So I decided to try out the with oxfords look like Sveta and Diana. I also tried out all my toppers that looked okay with the dress.

What do you think of these outfits? What works and what doesn't?

P.S. Pic 9 is the dress with my light grey denim vest. Does that look okay? It will be too cold to wear this in Paris, but I just wanted to try it. Excuse the house slippers pls!

I think it does work with oxfords and denim jacket! #7 is my favorite but #4 is great as well. This is a surefire formula to try.

The vest might work with a sandal? I'm not as sure with that one. Sweater looks ok but not as fab as jacket for me (it might be better in person since there is some pattern mixing - maybe with a scarf to add some interest?)

Christieanne: Yeah, I think some metallic sandals may help the vest work. The cardi has less structure than the jackets for sure, but IRL the pattern mixing IS pretty fun. #4 is my favourite too :-)

I think all of these work, but my faves are with the blue denim jacket and either pair of oxfords. Could you add a patterned scarf without being too hot?

I like it with the oxfords and jackets, the cardigan looks less "sharp" than the other options. My favorites are #3, 5, and 7. I think the vest and sandals work, too.

Claire: Yep! I have a red and black skull scarf that would be fun, plus my husband has a black and white plaid scarf I could nick. Thanks for the idea :-)

    Thanks Makrame :-)

    1. I love it with the striped sweater
    2. I love it with the oxfords
    3. What about wearing it with a white button-front shirt underneath? Sort of the Parisian schoolgirl look?

These outfits all work, Kirti. I especially love: #4, #5 and #6.

I really like the oxfords, I am partial to the one that look more low contrast on you. I like it with the red jacket, denim jacket and the sweater I think would be fun with dh scarf. What about the turquoise cardigan new from your mom?

    I love 3, 4, 5 and 7 - you've got some fabulous options there!

Very cute combos. You are right on with the casual jackets and oxfords. Good work.

  • Amy replied 11 years ago

    My favorite is #4 :)

Wow! That's working hard and with great results! I like 3, 5 and 8 best-est.

I love the denim jacket combo. and the oxfords are great.
Is there room for you to layer a long-sleeved T. underneath? That will provide some extra warmth too.

  • Kirti replied 11 years ago

L'abeille: Why didn't I think of that? I will try that combo asap. Thanks :-)

Thank you Angie! I really like the look with the cardigan IRL so glad it is one of your faves.

Sarah A: .That would be triple pattern mixing! The turquoise cardi is pretty long, so I thought it looked 'off' with the dress.

    Shannon: Thanks! :-)

    Thank you cjh!

  • Kirti replied 11 years ago

Amy: I knew it would be, because of the jacket! :-)

    Manidipa: Thank you! :-)

Lyn Dodd: There is. I am planning to carry a layering t shirt to Paris, just in case!

Fav looks are 4,6,7,8. Wish I was going to Paris - sigh...

  • Kirti replied 11 years ago

Kiwichik: I wish we could all have a meet up there!

Great style mixing Kirti! I actually like them all and love that you could team the dress with the vest and sandals also to make it a year round piece!
